about
'Lights On' aims to raise awareness of Nigeria’s energy supply crisis, an ongoing failure of the Nigerian power sector to provide electricity to households and industrial producers. The lack of a reliable power sector has left Nigeria’s population with an expensive and unreliable source of power. NEPA (National Electric Power Authority – also heard in ‘Lights On’) “brings the light” or takes it away. The constant power interruptions make living challenging due to the need for an alternative, and often unhealthy, sources of energy such as fuel-powered generators.
When Ziaflow performed at Afrigansa Festival in 2018 she got the inspiration to write her first self-produced track. Shifting gears with a soulful, sparse yet punchy electronic- RnB-Pop crossover, the song is aiming to get across an important social issue, bridging the gap between Africa and the rest of the world.
After meeting Lagos-based R’n’B singer Kymo Kingin, Ziaflow went back to Germany and started working on 'Lights On’. During her second visit to the country in 2019, the two artists met again to shoot the video of the song. The result is a sticky-sweet mix of Electronica and Soul including verses in Pidgin and Yoruba language.
